In a startling revelation, the Delta State Police Command has apprehended three teenagers for orchestrating the staged kidnapping of one of their peers, subsequently extorting a hefty sum of N700,000 from the victim's parents.
According to a statement issued by SP Bright Edafe, the spokesperson of the command, the trio, all aged 17, were apprehended following the successful collection of the ransom.
"These three suspects, all 17 years old and friends, collaborated to fabricate the kidnapping of one of their acquaintances in Agbor. They then reached out to the parent of one of the perpetrators, demanding a ransom. Their scheme unraveled after they collected a sum of N700,000," the statement disclosed.
The incident has sparked widespread concern over the lengths some youths are willing to go for quick financial gain. SP Edafe cautioned against the allure of shortcuts to success, emphasizing the potential dire consequences. "Our youths must exercise restraint. Pursuing shortcuts to success often leads to perilous outcomes. It is disheartening to witness a 17-year-old resorting to orchestrating a fake kidnapping for monetary gain," he remarked.
Furthermore, SP Edafe lamented the possibility of the teenagers' parents endeavoring to shield them from justice, underscoring the necessity for accountability and adherence to the rule of law. "It is regrettable that the parents may attempt to evade the consequences of their children's actions. However, justice must prevail," he asserted, affirming the commitment of law enforcement authorities to uphold justice and deter such illicit activities.
