The Bauchi State Police Command has announced the dismantling of a three-man gang engaged in extortion and threats of kidnapping, following the arrest of the suspects involved.
According to the spokesperson for the command, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, ANIPR, the suspects were apprehended for criminal conspiracy, intimidation, threat to life, and attempted kidnapping.
The arrests came after a businessman, Yahaya Adamu, reported to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit (AKU) of the Criminal Investigation Department that he had received threatening calls demanding a ransom of five million naira (N5,000,000:00). The caller claimed to have knowledge of Adamu's assets and family members, escalating the threat if the demanded sum was not paid.
Prompted by the report, the Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Muhammad Musa psc, directed a discreet investigation, leading to the arrest of the suspects: Haro Adamu, Aliyu Saidu, and Musa Umaru. The defendants were apprehended in Birnin Kudu LGA of Jigawa State and Kaltunga via Plateau State.
During interrogation, the suspects confessed to their involvement in the criminal activities. Haro Adamu admitted to coordinating the ransom collection, while Aliyu Saidu confessed to providing the victim's phone number to the group. Musa Umaru, on the other hand, disclosed his history of fraudulent activities, including phone scams and deceitful practices targeting travelers.
The police revealed that the gang had previously extorted money from other victims through similar tactics. All three suspects will face prosecution in court.
The Bauchi State Police Command reiterated its commitment to combating kidnapping and other heinous crimes, urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities promptly.
