The Ondo State Police Command has shed light on the tragic death of a woman allegedly stabbed to death by her 17-year-old niece in Akure, attributing the incident to psychiatric issues.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the police were alerted to the aunt's demise on March 17, when her body was discovered in a decomposing state.
Upon investigation, it was revealed that the victim had sustained stab wounds, with a knife found at the scene of the crime.
The teenager, who had been living with her deceased aunt since the age of six, reportedly disappeared from home. The foul odor emanating from the house alerted residents, prompting the deceased's sister to call the police after discovering the lifeless body.
During interrogation, the teenage girl confessed to stabbing her aunt and locking her in the house, citing constant pressure to take medication as the motive.
Family members disclosed that the teenager had been under her aunt's care since childhood but began exhibiting signs of mental illness in 2023. She had previously received treatment at a psychiatric hospital in the state and was discharged under her aunt's supervision.
Confirming this account, the psychiatric hospital provided the police with the girl's medical history.
In light of these findings, the teenager has been placed in protective custody at a police medical facility as investigations into the incident continue.
