In a significant breakthrough, detectives from the Ozuoba Police Division of the Rivers State Police Command have apprehended a man known as Prince, suspected of the abduction and assault of a 13-year-old girl in Ogbogoro, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The mother of the teenage victim, choosing anonymity to shield her family from potential stigma, reported that her daughter was taken by Prince on March 18, 2024, while she was running an errand.
Prompted by the distressing report, authorities swiftly initiated a manhunt for the suspect, who is believed to be in his mid-20s. Acting on intelligence, detectives from the Ozuoba Police Division conducted a successful operation, apprehending Prince at his residence on Friday morning.
Prince Wiro, the National Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection And Accountability Campaign, praised the police for their swift response to the incident. However, he expressed concern over indications that the victim's parents may be considering dropping the case.
"I received the news of the suspect's arrest with relief. I commend the Ozuoba Police Division for their diligent efforts," Wiro stated. "Unfortunately, there are signs that the parents of the girl may want to abandon the case, which is troubling."
Wiro also condemned reports of intimidation directed at the victim and her family allegedly by individuals claiming to be associates of the suspect. He urged the police to ensure that justice prevails for all parties involved.
Confirming the arrest, Grace Iringe-Koko, the Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, affirmed that Prince is currently in custody at the Ozuoba Police Division. She added that he would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation And Intelligence Department (SCIID) for further investigation.
The arrest marks a significant step forward in the pursuit of justice for the victim and highlights the commitment of law enforcement authorities to safeguarding the rights and well-being of all individuals in the community. As the investigation progresses, advocates remain vigilant, advocating for a fair and impartial resolution to the case.
