Tension has gripped the Umulogho community in Obowo Local Government Area (LGA) of Imo State following the alleged beating to death of a man identified as Ebuka Nwaneri by a hotel owner and military personnel over a missing phone.

According to reports by local sources, Nwaneri, a staff member of the hotel, was accused of stealing the phone belonging to a military guest at the facility. The situation escalated when Nwaneri was allegedly tortured and confined in the hotel's powerhouse, where he met his untimely demise.

The incident has triggered outrage within the community, with youths taking to the streets to demand justice for the deceased. They have threatened to take drastic action against the hotel if those responsible for Nwaneri's death are not apprehended swiftly.

In response to the escalating tensions, Henry Okoye, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, confirmed that investigations into the matter are underway.

"Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma has directed the Command's Complaint Response Unit (CRU) to conduct a comprehensive investigation into this allegation and ensure that justice is served," Okoye stated in a press release.

He urged any witnesses or individuals with relevant information to come forward and assist in identifying the alleged perpetrators.

The police have also taken action against some of the protesting youths, making arrests in connection with the demonstrations.

In a bid to restore calm, Chinagorom Cyriacus, the president of the Umulogho Youth Assembly, issued a statement calling for peace and emphasizing the commitment to ensuring that those responsible for Nwaneri's death face the full weight of the law.

"We condemn in the strongest terms whatever led to the murder of Nwaneri Ebuka, a fellow member of our community who was employed at the hotel," the statement read.

"We assure the residents of Umulogho that those responsible for this heinous act will be brought to justice. We urge our youth to remain calm and refrain from taking matters into their own hands. The community leadership is actively engaged in resolving the situation, and we extend our deepest condolences to the Nwaneri family."

As investigations continue, the community remains on edge, awaiting further developments in the pursuit of justice for the late Ebuka Nwaneri.
