In a significant drug bust, the Nigerian Navy Ship Luguard has successfully intercepted 620 kilograms of cannabis sativa, commonly known as Indian hemp, in Kogi State. The operation led to the arrest of one suspect, with another fleeing the scene.

Commodore Moses Epelle, Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship Luguard, detailed the operation during a press briefing in Lokoja. He reported that on April 4th, 2024, at approximately 12pm, naval personnel at the Jamata checkpoint arrested a suspect in a navy blue Golf car bearing the registration number HK511ABC. The vehicle was found to be transporting 620 parcels of the substance suspected to be marijuana from Edo State to Abuja, via Lokoja.

The driver, identified as Aliyu Lawal, was apprehended while his accomplice managed to escape. Lawal's attempt to bribe the naval officers was unsuccessful, with Commodore Epelle commending his team for their adherence to the core values of professionalism, integrity, and teamwork.

In addition to the cannabis, items recovered included a Police MESS membership card and a camouflage jungle hat, which were presumably used by the suspects to navigate through security checkpoints.

Commodore Epelle issued a stern warning to criminals, emphasizing that the navy is committed to curbing illegal activities and ensuring security in Kogi State. He recalled a similar operation on January 23rd, asserting the navy’s ongoing resolve to combat criminality.

The seized narcotics were handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kogi State Command. Superintendent of narcotics, Olorunfemi Abolarin, acknowledged receipt and announced that investigations were underway. He praised the NDLEA's efforts in curbing drug trafficking across the country and assured that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.

This operation marks another significant achievement for the Nigerian Navy in its ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and enhance security within the region.
