Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has firmly denied any connection between the state government and a recent N1 billion donation to the Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Lagos, made by his brother, Deji Adeleke. The governor clarified that the donation was a private act of philanthropy by his elder brother, a successful businessman.
This clarification comes in response to criticism from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, which accused Governor Adeleke and his family of making the donation at a time when the state is facing financial challenges. The APC, through its state chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, questioned the appropriateness of such a large donation, suggesting that it might have come from the state's funds.
In a statement released on Saturday by Governor Adeleke's spokesperson, the governor categorically denied any involvement in the donation and stressed that the funds were not drawn from the state's treasury. He accused the APC of spreading false information and reminded the public of his brother's history of philanthropy, including donations made to the state during the administration of former Governor Gboyega Oyetola.
"Let us all recall that Dr. Adeleke made substantial donations to the state government under the Oyetola administration during the COVID crisis. Was Governor Adeleke in office then?" the governor questioned. He also noted that Deji Adeleke had contributed significantly to federal efforts during the same period.
Governor Adeleke further criticized the APC's attempts to link the donation to religious favoritism, asserting that the Muslim community has received more support under his administration than during the previous APC government.
"The Osun APC is daily hallucinating as it has become overwhelmed by the superlative performances," the governor stated. He also referenced a recent controversy where the APC criticized the validation of Osun's infrastructure projects by professional bodies, noting that similar assessments were conducted in APC-led states like Lagos and Ogun.
Governor Adeleke concluded by urging the public to disregard what he described as "fake news" propagated by the opposition, reiterating that neither he nor the state government contributed to the N1 billion donation.
"We seek to put this unnecessary debate to rest by clarifying once again that neither the state government nor the state governor donated the said One Billion naira to the Lagos church. We add too that the said money is not being sourced from the state treasury," the statement read.
The governor's response aims to dispel any doubts regarding the source of the donation and to affirm his commitment to transparency in the administration of state funds.
