One person was killed, and ten others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a traffic accident involving a Mazda bus on the Saapade bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway on Saturday afternoon.
The spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State, Florence Okpe, confirmed the tragic incident in a statement released from Abeokuta. According to Okpe, the crash occurred at approximately 2:58 p.m. and involved a white Mazda bus with the registration number GGE 858 XY.
Okpe cited excessive speeding, a tyre burst, and subsequent loss of control as the primary causes of the accident.
"A total of 17 individuals were involved, including eight men, seven women, and two children," Okpe said. "Sadly, one woman lost her life, and ten others – two men, six women, and two children – sustained injuries."
The injured were swiftly taken to Patmag Hospital in Ogere for medical treatment, while the deceased has been transported to FOS Morgue in Ipara.
In a related statement, the Ogun Sector Commander of the FRSC, Akinwumi Fasakin, urged drivers to take greater precautions by regularly inspecting their tyres, including checking their expiration dates. Fasakin stressed that controlling a vehicle at reasonable speeds could help prevent accidents caused by tyre failure.
The FRSC continues to appeal to motorists to drive cautiously, especially on high-speed highways like the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
