The anti-graft agency arraigned the accused before Justice Bisi Akinlade on a two-count charge of alleged conspiracy to obtain N252m from a telecoms firm, MTN Nigeria, through false pretences.
According to the EFCC, the offence is contrary to section 1(3) and 8(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act No14, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2006. But when the two-count charge was read to essien, he pleaded ‘not guilty’.
Lawyer to the accused, Mr. Taiwo Taiwo, urged the court to remand the accused in the EFCC’s custody pending the hearing of his bail application.

But his request was opposed by the EFCC’s lawyer, Mr. Francis Usani, on the grounds that the prison was the proper place to remand an accused person.
Justice Akinlade, however, remanded the accused in Kirikiri Prison, Lagos and adjourned the matter till March 24.
