Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has commended the residents of Rivers State for their determination and resilience in the recent local government elections held on October 5, 2024. Voters across all 23 local government areas participated in the polls, electing chairpersons and councillors amid significant political tension.
Despite controversies fueled by some political figures, including Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike and representatives from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC), the elections proceeded without major disruptions. The Action Peoples Party (APP) emerged as the dominant force, securing nearly all chairmanship positions except for one.
In a statement released on social media, Atiku emphasized that the voter turnout and the conduct of the elections reflected the people's strong commitment to democracy, showcasing their rejection of "political oppression and self-serving interests." He praised Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his dedication to maintaining the integrity of the electoral process, especially in the face of significant challenges.
“The conclusion of the local government elections signifies a victory for democracy in Rivers State,” Atiku stated. “From Port Harcourt to Onne, the voices of the citizens resonate in unity, affirming their right to choose their leaders without fear of intimidation.”
He urged newly elected officials to prioritize the welfare of the community and to avoid the pitfalls of tyranny and selfish ambition. “It is the people who are the true victors in this election, their democratic rights upheld amidst adversity,” he added.
Atiku's remarks reflect a broader sentiment of resilience and hope among Rivers State residents, who navigated a politically charged environment to assert their democratic rights during the election.
