A former banker turned businessman, Olufemi Olalekan Olushakin, alongside two accomplices, has been charged with armed robbery following an alleged heist at Global Signature Hotel in Ibadan, Oyo State. Olushakin, who is currently on the run, and the two suspects—Ayomide Akanbi and David Adewale—are accused of conspiring to rob the hotel on the evening of December 13, 2024.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Kefas Usman, presented the charges before the Chief Magistrate Court, detailing the suspects' alleged actions, which violated the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act. According to Usman, Olushakin, a former bank manager and now chairman of LAC Autos & Spare Ltd., orchestrated the robbery with his accomplices. The trio reportedly gained entry into the hotel by disarming the security guards and proceeded to vandalize the CCTV system, rendering it useless.
The robbers then targeted the hotel’s point-of-sale (POS) machines before coercing the hotel manager, Dare Akinola, at gunpoint to hand over over N2.14 million in cash from various sources, including room bookings, bar sales, and event payments. They also threatened guests in the hotel rooms, forcing them to transfer money into Olushakin's personal account.
In the course of the robbery, the suspects damaged property, including computers and the hotel’s guest registry. The police report revealed that the robbers also made transfers to Olushakin’s account under duress.
Following the court proceedings, Chief Magistrate Mrs. Giwa Babalola ordered the remand of the two suspects at Agodi Correctional Center in Ibadan, with the case adjourned to January 29, 2025. Meanwhile, Olushakin remains at large, and the Oyo State Police Command has issued a N5 million bounty for any information leading to his capture.
The charges against the suspects include conspiracy to commit armed robbery and theft, punishable under sections of the Robbery and Firearms Act. The police have intensified efforts to apprehend Olushakin, who is said to be the mastermind behind the crime.
