A devastating fire in the Ori-Eru, Idikan area of Ibadan, Oyo State, has resulted in the deaths of a husband, his wife, and their grandson. The fire, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, engulfed the upper floor of a storey building, leading to a tragic loss of life.
Yemi Akinyinka, General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday, revealing that the agency received an emergency call at 3:46 a.m. from a concerned resident named Hassan. Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene and managed to extinguish the blaze after it had caused significant damage to the six-room residential building.
Akinyinka reported that three individuals—two adults and a child—lost their lives in the fire, while five others were successfully rescued. Fortunately, the ground floor of the building and nearby properties were not affected by the flames.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the fire may have been caused by a naked flame that was being used to keep the house warm during the cold weather. The victims had reportedly fallen asleep while the flame was still burning, which ultimately led to the tragic disaster.
In response to the fire, a team of law enforcement officers, including CSP Olaniyan Jibola from Mapo Division and Amotekun operatives led by Gbenga Akinyemi, were present at the scene to maintain order and facilitate the investigation.
