A heartbreaking incident has shaken the community of Uja village in Oru Oboro, Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, as a pre-nursery pupil, Okoronta Jessica Chuks, tragically lost her life after allegedly ingesting a harmful liquid substance at school.
The father of the deceased, Mr. Okoronta Chuks, claims that his daughter died after consuming kerosene negligently stored on school premises. In contrast, the school management insists it took every necessary step to save the child's life after realizing the severity of the situation.
According to Mr. Chuks, he received a distressing call from the school's headmistress on November 21, 2024, informing him that his daughter had been rushed to a clinic in Nnono Oboro. He expressed frustration at not being informed earlier and not having a say in the choice of the medical facility.
"Imagine, they took my child to a clinic without my knowledge! As her parent, I should have been consulted, especially since we have a family doctor. When I got to the clinic, it was a horrifying scene," the grieving father said, his voice heavy with emotion.
Despite hopes for her recovery, young Jessica passed away at the clinic. Her father has since reported the incident to the Ikwuano Divisional Headquarters of the Nigerian Police Force, demanding justice for his daughter.
Local leader and Secretary of the Oboro Council of President Generals Forum, James Uchegbuo, condemned the alleged negligence, emphasizing that no harmful substances should be stored in areas accessible to children. He called on the police to conduct a thorough investigation and deliver justice to the bereaved family.
The Abia State Police Command confirmed receiving the report. Speaking to *Daily Post*, Police Spokesperson ASP Maureen Chinaka stated, "Yes, we have such a report. It has been lodged, and an investigation is ongoing."
As the community mourns the loss of a young life, the incident raises serious questions about safety protocols in schools, particularly regarding hazardous materials in environments meant for children.
