President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has canceled all his scheduled official events in Lagos during the Christmas holiday in mourning over the tragic stampedes in Abuja and Anambra State that claimed numerous lives on Saturday.
The incidents, which occurred at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, and during a rice distribution event in Okija, Anambra State, left at least 30 people dead and many others injured.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and called for immediate enforcement of crowd control measures by state and local authorities to prevent such tragedies in the future.
President Tinubu was scheduled to watch a boat parade and other activities of the Lagos Boat Regatta from the waterfront of his Oyinkan Abayomi Drive residence in Ikoyi. However, upon receiving briefings on the tragedies, he canceled his appearance. Dignitaries, including Lagos State officials and traditional white cap chiefs, had already gathered at the venue before the President’s announcement.
“Commiserating with the victims of the unfortunate incidents in Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory, President Tinubu urged states and relevant authorities to enforce strict crowd control measures immediately,” the statement read.
The President noted similarities between the recent stampedes and a similar tragedy in Ibadan, Oyo State, earlier in the week. He called for stricter oversight of organizations and corporate bodies conducting charitable or humanitarian events, emphasizing the need for operational safeguards.
While praying for the repose of the souls of the deceased and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured, Tinubu stressed that such mishaps are preventable with proper planning and adherence to safety protocols.
The President’s decision to cancel his Lagos engagements has been described as a mark of respect for the victims and their grieving families.
