Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has urged Nigerians to use Kemi Badenoch’s recent comments about the country as a catalyst for positive change.
Badenoch, the Nigeria-born leader of the UK’s Conservative Party, had stated that she wouldn’t want Britain to become like poor Nigeria, where failed governments and selfish politicians destroy lives.
Obi responded to Badenoch’s remarks in an X post on Tuesday, saying, “What should we make of all the negative remarks about Nigeria?”
He noted that Nigerians have had mixed reactions to her comments, with some criticizing her and others feeling she simply stated the obvious.
Obi emphasized that instead of resorting to blind patriotism, Nigerians should use criticisms like Badenoch’s as a challenge to prioritize critical areas of development and improve the lives of citizens.
He lamented that five years after a travel advisory highlighted Nigeria’s poor infrastructure and insecurity, the situation remains largely unchanged.
“It’s not enough to resort to blind patriotism by vilifying those who point out our shortcomings.
“Instead, we should use these criticisms as a catalyst to prioritize critical areas of development and improve the lives of our people,” he said.
Obi’s comments come as Nigeria faces various challenges, including poor infrastructure, insecurity, and a lack of quality healthcare facilities.
