A police inspector has been arrested in Abuja for allegedly attempting to transport live ammunition through the Nyanya Motor Park, sparking concerns over internal security breaches within the force.
The arrest was made around 3:15 p.m. on Friday, April 19, following a routine inspection carried out by security operatives in collaboration with members of the Keffi Motor Park Union. Suspicion arose over a parcel marked for delivery to Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.
Upon inspection, officials discovered an AK-47 magazine loaded with 30 rounds of live ammunition concealed within the package.
The suspect, identified as Inspector Kasimu Usman, is attached to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command. He was promptly detained by authorities at the scene.
Sources close to the investigation revealed that during preliminary questioning, Usman confessed the ammunition was meant for another police officer, Inspector Haruna Mohammed, who currently serves with the 58 Police Mobile Force (PMF) in Nasarawa State.
The motive behind the illicit transfer remains unclear, but officials have confirmed that an internal investigation is underway to uncover the full scope of the incident and determine whether additional officers were involved.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement, but security analysts say the incident raises fresh concerns over the handling of arms within the police force.
