Tragedy struck in the early hours of yesterday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, when two people lost their lives while three others sustained serious injuries in an auto crash on the Ojo/Iwo Road Expressway.
The two dead victims, were identified as Ibrahim and Yusuf.
The accident involved a trailer with registration number XB 261 ZUR (Kebbi) loaded with yam tubers and was said to be coming from Abuja when the accident occurred at about 6.00 am.
It was gathered that the trailer left Abuja about 3.00 pm on Tuesday enroute Lagos, when its two front tyres burst while on high speed, making the vehicle to veer off the road.
The deceased were said to be sitting on top of the open-roof of the vehicle and were flung off when the tyre burst. They were later found buried in the yams, while two women who were said to be sitting by the the driver sustained injuries. When Daily Sun visited the scene of the accident, policemen from Kajorepo Police Station around the area were busy with the rescue operations.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and men of the Nigeria Police Force had difficult time controlling the traffic as the accident caused a gridlock. The FRSC Head of Operations, Oyo State, Commander Joshua Adekanye, who led his men to the scene confirmed to newsmen that the accident was caused by burst tyres. Adekanye warned motorists to desist from buying tokunbo tyres and also avoid overloading, adding that the trailer compounded its problem with overloading.
