Tragedy struck in the quiet communities of Mbachon and Mbagbe within Turan, Yaav Council Ward, located in the Kwande local government area of Benue state as suspected gunmen unleashed terror, resulting in the death of four individuals on Friday, May 10th.

The affected communities, situated near the Taraba state border with Benue, fell victim to the brazen attack at approximately 5 pm, catching residents off guard as they were preparing to settle down for the evening.

According to Lawrence Akerigba, a member of the community, the assailants stormed the two villages, opening fire indiscriminately and leaving a trail of devastation in their wake. Four people tragically lost their lives in the attack, with one body already evacuated for burial, while three individuals remain missing. Additionally, one person was reportedly abducted during the violent incursion.

Kwande Local Government area, known for its proximity to Taraba state, has grappled with incessant attacks from herdsmen for over a decade and a half, with the recent incident serving as a grim reminder of the persistent security challenges faced by communities in the region.

Lawrence Akerigba lamented the dire situation, highlighting the dire consequences for local farmers whose livelihoods are threatened by the violence. With farming activities resuming as the rainy season begins, he emphasized the urgent need for security agencies to safeguard vulnerable farmers and ensure their safety in order to prevent further disruptions to agricultural activities.

Despite the gravity of the situation, the Benue police command stated that they are yet to receive an official report regarding the killings, underscoring the need for swift action and heightened security measures to address the escalating violence in the region.
