Success in life, many times, intoxicates. If not managed carefully, it can get into a man’s head, bloats his ego, and makes him see himself as special. He could begin to attribute all his accomplishments to his wisdom, hard work and personal ingenuity. He would give little or no consideration to God or the men that assisted him on his way up the ladder of success. This is not just the height of folly, but a most dangerous path to take.
God had foretold Moses the path of disobedience that the Israelites would take as they settled in the Promised Land, and began to prosper there. Moses had turned it into a song. In the song, God said that the Israelites would forsake Him as they prospered. They would turn to other gods, make sacrifices to devils, forget God, and provoke the Lord who had been so good to them. For this, God would be moved to jealousy. He would hide His face from them, and allow heathen nations to invade and plunder their land. In His anger, God would allow them to suffer untold hardship and pain. Famine, drought and pestilence would hit their land. Both the young and old in the land would suffer this intense hardship because they forsook God. They would be terrorised by their enemies, and scattered to many nations.
Whether in good or bad times, it is a dangerous thing to forsake God. When you prosper, never forget that it is God that has given you the power to acquire wealth. To be unmindful of this will be to equate yourself with God, and therefore incur His anger and suffer great consequences. If God allows just one misfortune into your life, all your riches and success and accomplishments would mean nothing any more. Be wise then, and stay with God, whatever the height you have attained. For therein is the only guarantee for your safety and security.
Thought for the Day: When it is well with you, learn to remember God!
