* then police came calling

WHAT a confession. The tale as he narrated it will beat the imagination of any man, yet that was exactly what Sunday Vanguard gathered was the past of a car snatching suspect, Chukwudieme Onwuamadike. The 27-year old secondary school drop out from Imo State came to Lagos like many other Nigerians not in search of the proverbial golden fleece, but to live the life of crime with an avowal decision to make it no matter what it will take him and his men. Infact, it could be said that he lived by the gun.

The first in a family of about six children, he has seen it all in the crime world. “I snatched thirty cars in ninety days”, Chukwudieme told reporters. He is now being held at SCID Panti Yaba Lagos and was one of about twenty one robbery suspects paraded last Wednesday at the state police command, Ikeja.

Police sources claimed that luck ran out on the suspect when police got a tip- off that the suspect was on admission in one hospital in Isolo area where he was nursing a bullet wound. Ever since his arrest, Chukwudieme has allegedly made mind -bogging revelations. According to him at the parade, last week, the weapons that the gang used in unleashing terror on its victims were sourced from a French man, while the cars it snatched were sold by one Alhaji Alhasan who resided in the Victoria Garden City, VGC, Lagos. He said that the gang was always interested in exquisite cars and that its operating bases were eateries and shopping  malls.

He told Sunday Vanguard:  “I lived with my parents in the village before coming to Lagos. I am married with two kids. I joined our gang when in 2003 I met one Chinedu. I cannot count the number of cars I have stolen, all I know is that I have snatched about thirty cars in ninety days. Our victims are always intercepted at the eateries across the nation. Our gang members like Emeka, Felix, Ikenna, Uche and Egu will sit in a particular eatery pretending that they want to buy snacks and drink. Meanwhile, we will be monitoring any person with exotic car of our choice. We would allow the person buy whatever he wants and by the time he leaves, we will trail him to his house. Our driver Uche is a good driver, he will use our Toyota Cricket to follow the person and the man will not notice us.

“No car is too difficult for us to snatch, even with any security you may put in the car. We always like exotic cars because of the big money we get from them. We don’t sell the cars ourselves, once we get them, Ikenna will contact Alhaji Alhasan and hand them over to him for the sale and our money. He lives in VGC. We have stolen many jeeps in Lagos and Owerri. I got a bullet wound in Nnewi in 2003. It was when we wanted to snatch a jeep from one man, we trailed the man until we got to the front of his house. But unknown to us, his security guard had a fully loaded gun and he opened fire on me.

I fell down because of the bullet wounds but other members of our gang rushed back and carried me away. It was later that my mother contacted a native doctor who came and treated me. Another bullet wound I got was from  Uche who is a member of our gang, he shot me because Istole about eight hundred thousand gang’s money. When Uche shot me, I was taken to a hospital at Isolo for treatment. Our gang managed to get a police report before I was admitted at that hospital. It was while I was in that hospital receiving treatment from the gun shot wound that one day the police stormed the hospital and arrested me”

The world is really becoming something we all can not put a name to.

My only prayer is for God to help us all.

Well, when their cup became full, when the Almighty was tired of their mess, he put it in his heart to steal from his own group and that marked his end and probably the end of that group............others beware, God is watching you from a distance!

We are each our own devil, and we make this world our hell.
The first idea a child must acquire is that of the difference between good and evil. The choice `ll be totally his when he`s of age.
