Nigeria’s ruling party, The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that it cannot be held responsible for the inability of opposition political parties to discipline their members and to peacefully organise activities. The National Publicity Secretary, Mr Olise Metuh, made this known in a statement he issued in Abuja.

It was his reaction to the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) allegation that the PDP was responsible for the crisis in most opposition parties.

“Our attention has been drawn to a statement by the CNPP blaming the PDP for the intractable crisis in some political parties.“To set the records straight, we wish to state that the PDP cannot be held responsible for the inability of any group to discipline its members and peacefully organise itself.“We shall not be distracted by such claims as we are determined more than ever before to broaden our support base and provide the political muscle for the success of President Goodluck Jonathan’s transformation agenda.“While we welcome the concept of a virile and strong opposition in a democracy, we wish to state that we do not exist to solve the self inflicted problems of our opponents,’’ the statement said.

Metuh urged the CNPP to look elsewhere in its search for the reasons of its travails and to refrain from unnecessary name calling.

He said the fact that fringe political associations had been unable to manage disagreements among members was a clear evidence of their unpreparedness to administer a complex society like Nigeria. This the statement said showed that the CNPP lacked the basic democratic tenets of sacrificing individual interests for the larger group.“We in the PDP are proud of our heritage as a political movement deeply entrenched in the pursuit of the best democratic practices.

“We are not ashamed to admit that we have had our own share of internal conflicts, but what sets us above the rest is our ability to skillfully manage them and emerge even stronger.“This is because our members have been nurtured to always consider the supremacy of the party over any individual.’’ the statement said.It added that the reason other political parties got torn apart by internal strife was because they were formed; “ to serve narrow selfish and ethnic interests.’’The statement added that such parties do not possess the ability to mobilise a national consensus, adding that they were; “ extensions of the personal empires of the clique that run them.’’It said that it was worrisome that such parties rather than confront their challenges had resorted to blaming those who had painstakingly put their house in order with the capacity to lead.
