Lancashire Police said he was bitten and then fell and hit his head, which they suspect caused his death.
He lived at the property with the dogs' owner.
Inspector Simon Atkinson of Lancashire Police said: "Both turned and made a sustained attack on him, making puncture marks on his upper body.
"The owner of the dogs intervened and the dogs were dragged away."
Mr Atkinson said police believed the man may then have fallen over several times and banged his head.
He said he collapsed and died shortly afterwards despite the intervention of paramedics.
The cause of death has not been established and a post-mortem will be carried out.
Mr Atkinson said: "We cannot dismiss the possibility he died as a consequence of falling in the course of this incident."
The two dogs have been destroyed at the direction of their owner.
