Two policemen on duty at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Mega Station in Gombe, Gombe State, were shot dead by armed robbers yesterday night, during an operation that lasted for about 10 minutes.

Narrating the incident to journalists, the Assistant Station Manager, Sa’idu Yahaya, who was the only worker left behind after the day’s business at about 7:40 p.m., said he was compiling his daily record in his office when he heard gun shots within the premises of the station.

According to him, when he came out to see what was happening, three young men he suspected to be between 21 to 23 years with AK-47 rifles approached him and asked for the station’s cash room.

He said he told them that there was no cash as the worker handling the cash had closed for the day. Thereafter, they forced him to the cash
office and when they discovered there was nothing, they discharged him, while two others immediately joined him and left in a waiting car.
Yahaya said he returned much later to discover the lifeless bodies of the two policemen on the floor of the station, while the entire restroom was covered with blood.

Confirming the incident to journalists, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Fwaji Atajiri, said the police had discovered that the robbers were on transit, adding that investigations was ongoing.Atagiri stated that two of the robbers escaped with gunshot wounds after an exchange of fire with the policemen.

He called on members of the public to watch out for anybody with bullet wounds seeking medical attention, stressing that the command would not rest until the state is peaceful.
