On the 1st of April 2015, INEC announced General Muhammadu Buhari (APC) as the President-elect of the Republic of Nigeria. Beyond just politics there are essential lessons to learn from Buhari .
Here are some of those lessons:
- Lesson #1 Your past does not have to limit your success
A major fact used by the opposition against Buhari was his past. He once toppled Nigeria’s democracy under Shegu Shagari so that posed as a threat to him winning the elections.
Despite the failures and mistakes of the past he kept on pushing, learning and making amends as much as he could in order to attain the success that he desired.
Your past does not determine your success. It’s your belief and firm determination that helps you to achieve success in life and business.
- Lesson #2 Losing doesn’t equal failure. You only fail when you give up
Buhari contested for presidency three times and lost, but he never failed. There is a huge difference between losing and failing, and between falling and failing.
Expect to lose in business, and at some point fall but don’t give up. Rise up, dust yourself by learning from your mistakes and keep pushing till you attain that goal.
Buhari was mocked and ridiculed after he lost in all three attempts but he didn’t give up and he won this year. The same thing applies to life and business no matter the circumstance and challenges you face don’t give up.
- Lesson #3 Let something drive you to attain success
Buhari had a drive that kept pushing him through all the elections till he finally won. Everybody has different things that drive them to attain success. It could be for financial abundance, for fame, to impact the world, to leave a legacy, some want to be remembered in history.
No matter what it is make sure that something is driving you. and as far as you are confident it would sustain you to achieve success.
- Lesson #4 Surround yourself with the right people
Buhari’s victory in the election was attained because of the people he surrounded himself with during his campaign. Note that people can inspire or drain you so choose them wisely. Don’t keep people who try to belittle your ambitions, keep people who are like minded and would help you achieve the success you desire.
Most importantly make sure you are that kind of friend to your friends.
- Lesson #5 Have a principle and let everybody be aware of it
Buhari is a man of principle and we all know it. He has a very strong opinion against corruption and indiscipline, and he seems to be one of the few politicians that haven’t been indicted in any form of corruption.
Successful business people have principles and they are widely known for it. Have a business principle you live by and don’t ever compromise it for anything. A time would come when your principle would save you.
