ABUJA — Pioneer Chairman of Independent Corrupt Practi-ces and other related Offences Commission (ICPC), Justice Mustapha Akanbi (Rtd), disclosed, weekend, in Abuja that Nigeria has lost about N400 billion to corrupt practices in the last few years.

Akanbi, who spoke at the 3rd National Convention of the Labour Party, admitted that the nation’s war against corruption has not been successful as the efforts made by the anti-corruption agencies have not yielded the desired result.

Akanbi who tagged the lost funds “good money down the drain”, however reiterated the need for Nigerian leaders to do away with corrupt tendencies if the nation must make progress.

In his paper titled “Curbing Corruption by Political Leaders: Challenges and Prospects” noted that the nation also must get it right electorally if the nation will not be bugged down with corrupt office holders.

He siad, “efforts made by anti-corruption agencies and bodies have not succeeded in effectively curbing the excesses of those rapacious purveyors of the hydra-headed monster of corruption who are hell bent in acquiring wealth by hook or crook”.

On the danger posed to the nation’s development by the inglorious act, he said “it is common knowledge that corruption is a fatal disease that can kill any nation, hence the need to tackle it head-on. It is beyond question that corruption stunts growth and hamper economic progress.
