The American Center for International Labor Solidarity (www.solidaritycent er.org), a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting and protecting worker rights, is looking to hire a Program Officer. If you would like to make a difference in the lives of working people throughout Nigeria, please consider joining our team. This is a full-time position based in Abuja that requires extensive travel.

Summary of Position: The Program Officer will report directly to the Country Program Director (CPD) and work closely with the Senior Program Officer in developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating various programs; leading a variety of workshops, trainings and initiatives; and providing technical assistance to our union and community partners. S/he will be responsible for day-to-day contact with and support to our union and community partners. S/he is thoroughly conversant with all aspects of regional program activities and current events relevant to political, economic, social, and trade union developments in the region.

The Program Officer writes persuasive proposals, describes complex activities, and develops budgets for such activities. S/he participates in the development and implementation of education, training and other programs. S/he has the writing skills necessary to produce well-written program reports and evaluations. S/he monitors programs to meet budget targets and programmatic results. S/he prepares and exchanges information and coordinates activities with Solidarity Center partners as required.

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Develop programs in collaboration with union and community partners
2. Lead workshops, seminars, and other trainings
3. Provide programmatic, financial, and administrative support
4. Write/edit proposals, reports, letters, and other correspondence
5. Conduct meetings and develop coalition-building contacts with labor leaders and other community organizations involved in efforts to promote labor rights and standards
6. Follow government rules and regulations that affect program management
7. Report on country conditions and labor issues
8. Work closely with labor centers and their affiliates to coordinate participation in the development and implementation of Solidarity Center programs
9. Monitor programs to meet budget targets
10. Perform other related duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications: A Program Officer must have broad knowledge of international relations including trade union and socio-economic and political developments in West Africa, the U.S. and across the globe. Previous trade union experience is highly desirable. S/he must be able to work independently and complete assignments with limited supervision. S/he must be capable of managing multiple assignments simultaneously. S/he must have, at a minimum, a bachelor’s degree in political science, international relations, labor relations or related fields and/or five years equivalent work experience. Strong verbal and writing skills are a must. Computer literacy for word processing and simple spreadsheets is required. The Program Officer must have the ability to work and interact easily with a wide variety of people.
