Three employees of South African TV channel SuperSport have been kidnapped in south-east Nigeria.

The three - one South African and two Nigerians - were reportedly attacked near the airport in Owerri, after covering a football match in Enugu.

South Africa's foreign ministry said it was in contact with Nigerian officials but gave no further details.

It is not clear who is responsible but foreigners are often kidnapped for ransom in the nearby Niger Delta.

"The attackers ordered out more than 20 people inside the bus and took away the three and the bus," SuperSport's general manager in Nigeria Felix Awogu told the AFP news agency.

Militants in the Niger Delta have cost Nigeria's oil industry millions of dollars over the years.

A variety of groups have claimed to be fighting for the rights of local people to gain a greater share of the region's wealth.

But in reality, many of the groups have stolen oil from pipelines and extracted ransoms from kidnaps, using the money to arm themselves and finance more attacks.

Journalist working for M-Net SuperSport was kidnapped in Nigeria on Monday afternoon, SABC news reported.

A bus the SuperSport team was travelling on was attacked on its way to Lagos. The journalist, named as Nick Greyling, and two Nigerian nationals were apparently kidnapped. A Nigerian cameraman was reportedly shot and wounded.

International relations department spokeswoman Nomfanelo Kota said they had been made aware of the kidnapping of a South African in Nigeria, but she could not confirm if it was a journalist.

She said the high commissioner in Nigeria, Kingsley Mamabolo, was in contact with the west African country's authorities. The department would continue monitoring developments and offer support to the family.

Tirocco

I am saying he is white because he probably comes form a well to do family. Here is how sh*t works in SA: If a white person is a victim, his family will hire private investigators and highly rated negotiators to get their child/husband free because they have the money to do so. The government favors them as well. therefore, I said what I said because soon, he shall be freed..you mark my words!! If it were a black brother, Id be worried because the poor oke would be deserted and be left to naija cannibals. Wink

Can somebody go and find Tirocco for me please!!

This is what I meant, the man has been released and even though he is denying it, ransom was paid.  Hmmm... The privilege of being WHITE!!

Nick Greyling, the Supersport sound engineer who was kidnapped in Nigeria, arrived safely in South Africa on Wednesday morning, the family spokesman said.

"He landed from Lagos this morning," said Johan Russouw.

"He is very, very tired; he is exhausted, but under the circumstances, he is doing very well."

Russouw, who is Greyling's father-in-law, said the family was very grateful to those who helped secure his release after the abduction last Monday.

Greyling and his wife would spend a quiet day together.

"The first thing they are going to do now is have breakfast together," said Russouw.

"His youngest daughter is sitting on her dad's lap."

Greyling and his wife have three daughters, aged seven, four and one-and-a-half.

"To say that they are happy to see each other will be an under-statement."

Russouw said Supersport was expected to release a media statement later on Wednesday but no plans had been made for Greyling to address the media.

The department of international relations and co-operation said on Tuesday it was up to Greyling if he wanted to talk about the ordeal.

Spokesperson Nomfanelo Kota declined to comment on reports by the international news agency Agence France Presse (AFP) out of Lagos that 15 million naira ($100 000) ransom was paid to secure his release.

Russouw said: "As far as I know, no ransom was paid. His release was secured through co-operation between the governments of Nigeria and South Africa and with the help of a negotiating party."

Greyling was released on Monday night. He had been taken hostage with two of his Nigerian Supersport colleagues -- cameraman Alexander Effiong and commentator Bowie Attamah -- when their bus was attacked in the Imo province, near the Oweri airport.

Effiong escaped soon after the attack and Attamah was released on Friday. - Sapa
