
National Chairman of the Peoples Progressive Party (PPP), Mr. Damian Ogbona was yesterday docked at an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court for allegedly fraudulently converting the sum of N12 million belonging to the party to his personal use.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the accused person conspired with the Deputy National President of the party in the South-west, Olusegun Akinyele and the National Treasurer of the party, Jennifer Nkiru to commit the said offence.
They are therefore charged for criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust and cheating contrary to Sections 97,312 and 333 of the Penal Code Law.
The Prosecution counsel, Simon Lough told the court that the offence was reported to the police on December 13, 2007 by the National Secretary of the party, Alhaji Usman Aliyu Griel.
They were said to have fraudulently withdrawn the sum of N12 million from the party’s account and converted same to “your use without the consent and authority of the National Executive Committee and other officials of the party.”
Meanwhile, the Chief Magistrate, Hafsat Soso had set aside her earlier order directing the police to avail the accused person with documents obtained during the time of investigation at the instance of the prosecution counsel adjourned the case to January 27, 2011 for continuation of hearing.
But in a dramatic twist, the accused person who was already on bail was re-arrested by the police who had ambushed him outside the court premises on fresh charges. He was alleged to have defrauded the Yobe State government to the tune of N15 million involving a contract transaction for the supply of hospital equipment.
The accused person who protested vehemently was eventually overpowered by the police detectives who whisked him away in a waiting taxi cap.
