The police in Enugu State, Nigeria, have arrested a 45-year-old man identified as Joseph Nnamani for allegedly stealing 18 bags of rice valued at about N400,000. According to Daniel Ndukwe, the police spokesperson in the state, Nnamani presented himself as a philanthropist intending to distribute the rice for charity at a church on February 14.
Nnamani reportedly contacted a rice seller from whom he requested the 18 bags of rice. The rice seller supplied the rice and accompanied Nnamani to a bank to receive payment through a transfer. However, while at the bank, Nnamani secretly left the premises and returned to the church, where he made away with the bags of rice to an unknown location.
Upon receiving the report, the police launched an intelligence-driven investigation, leading to Nnamani's arrest on February 20, 2024, in Emene, Enugu. Eight of the stolen bags of rice were recovered from Nnamani, while the others had been re-packaged and sold at Oye Emene Market.
Ndukwe stated that Nnamani will be arraigned once investigations are concluded and urged other business owners who may have been defrauded by Nnamani to come forward and report to the police.
