In a stirring Easter message, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, delivered a sobering assessment of Nigeria's leadership, likening it to individuals lost in a haze of drunken confusion for over six decades, desperately seeking a way home amidst staggering missteps and faltering governance.

Reflecting on the nation's tumultuous journey, Bishop Kukah urged the Federal Government to chart a robust course towards national healing, emphasizing the imperative for decisive action to reverse the tide of socio-economic woes plaguing the country.

"Our leaders chose the feast rather than the fast," remarked Bishop Kukah, underscoring the consequences of decades of neglect and mismanagement. "For over 60 years, our leaders have looked like men in a drunken stupor, staggering, stumbling and fumbling, slurring in speech, with blurred visions searching for the way home."

In a call to action, Bishop Kukah implored the government to adopt urgent measures to address the pressing economic challenges and alleviate the suffering of the populace, emphasizing the need for inclusive policies to combat nepotism and promote national cohesion.

"The government must design a more comprehensive and wide-ranging method of recruitment that is transparent," urged the bishop, advocating for a departure from entrenched systems of favoritism and cronyism.

Furthermore, Bishop Kukah stressed the importance of clear communication and accountability in governance, urging the government to articulate tangible goals and timelines for achieving national objectives.

Addressing the pervasive insecurity plaguing the nation, Bishop Kukah denounced the militarization of civilian life and called for a strategic overhaul of the security architecture to effectively combat criminal elements.

"No other person than the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, who recently referred to the military as facing the dilemma of what he called ‘see finish,’" noted Bishop Kukah, highlighting the urgent need to restore public trust in the security apparatus.

In a plea for decisive action, Bishop Kukah urged President Bola Tinubu to treat kidnapping and banditry as acts of terrorism, calling for a relentless campaign to eradicate these threats and restore peace and security across the nation.

Echoing the sentiments of many Nigerians, Bishop Kukah emphasized the importance of prioritizing agriculture and revitalizing the rural economy to ensure food security and economic prosperity for all citizens.

As Bishop Kukah's clarion call reverberates across the nation, it serves as a poignant reminder of the collective responsibility to steer Nigeria away from the abyss of despair towards a brighter, more prosperous future founded on principles of justice, transparency, and inclusive governance.
