In a significant bust, operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have apprehended Freeman Charles Ogbonna, a passenger bound for Delhi, India, who ingested a staggering 80 wraps of cocaine.
The arrest took place at the screening point of Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos, underscoring the agency's continued efforts to combat drug trafficking.
According to Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media & Advocacy for the NDLEA, Ogbonna was intercepted on March 31 while attempting to board a flight to Delhi, India via Doha on Qatar Airways. He was carrying a Liberian passport under the name Carr Bismark.
Subsequent body scans revealed the presence of illicit drugs in Ogbonna's system, prompting further investigation. Despite attempts to conceal his identity, he was identified as Freeman Charles Ogbonna and placed under observation in NDLEA custody.
As the interrogation progressed, Ogbonna began to exhibit signs of discomfort, eventually vomiting and excreting the wraps of cocaine he had ingested. Over a period of four days, he passed a total of 80 wraps weighing 889 grams.
Despite the grave risk to his health, Ogbonna confessed to being recruited into drug trafficking by a relative, who promised him a reward of N300,000 upon successful delivery of the consignment in India. The drugs were administered to him at a hotel in the Ipodo area of Ikeja.
The apprehension of Ogbonna highlights the persistent challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in curbing drug trafficking and underscores the NDLEA's commitment to dismantling criminal networks involved in illicit drug trade.
