A 45-year-old cleric, Mr. Sunday Adewoye, found himself in the dock before the Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, facing charges of unlawful segxwal penetration and rape against a 22-year-old woman.
The accused, whose address remains undisclosed, was brought before the court on Tuesday to answer for his alleged actions.
According to the prosecutor, Insp Ayodele Adeosun, the offenses were purportedly committed on April 17 at 5.00 p.m. along Joseph Dosu Way, Badagry. Adewoye stands accused of engaging in segxwal intercourse with the young woman without her consent, contravening Sections 260 and 263 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
In light of the serious charges, Chief Magistrate Mr. Patrick Adekomaiya opted not to entertain Adewoye's plea, seeking guidance from the state director of public prosecutions.
Pending further advice, the magistrate ordered that the defendant be remanded in a custodial facility.
The case has been adjourned until June 3 for mention, as legal proceedings continue to unfold in this disturbing allegation of segxwal assault.
