The Lagos State Police Command has demoted a police inspector to sergeant following an attempt to extort money from a drone operator. This disciplinary action was confirmed by the command's spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday.
"The disciplinary process of the police officer who harassed a drone operator on the Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge has been concluded. He has been reduced in rank from inspector to sergeant," Hundeyin stated.
The incident, which took place on April 6, 2024, was brought to light by a viral video showing two police officers demanding a permit from a drone operator on the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge. Hundeyin initially responded to the video, clarifying that the officers were within their rights to request a permit.
"Nigerian aviation laws stipulate that a permit must be obtained from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) for operating drones weighing more than 250 grams anywhere within the country," Hundeyin explained.
However, he condemned the officers' unprofessional conduct, particularly their attempt to extort the drone operator, which was evident in the latter part of the video.
"The Lagos State Police Command totally condemns the unprofessional conduct of the officers in attempting to extort the drone operator," he said.
Following the incident, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Adegoke Fayoade, instructed the Commanding Officer of 49 PMF Akodo, from whose squadron the officers were assigned to the bridge, to produce them for appropriate disciplinary actions.
