In a candid interview on Radionow FM, Nollywood actress Omoni Oboli opened up about her early career struggles, revealing how she often traded her scripts for acting roles. This experience, however, led to a significant shift in her career path toward directing.
Oboli explained that she would offer her scripts in exchange for a role, a strategy she used to secure parts in films. However, the final versions of these movies frequently did not match her creative vision. "I’d watch the film and realize it wasn’t what I had envisioned," Oboli shared. She noted that while each director brought their unique interpretation to the scripts, she wanted her stories to maintain her personal creative stamp.
This frustration ultimately drove Oboli to pursue directing herself. Despite initial doubts, she began studying directors on set while acting, eventually deciding to formalize her knowledge by taking a short course at the New York Film Academy.
Oboli’s determination to preserve her artistic vision and her willingness to learn helped her successfully transition into directing. "If my stories are going to have my DNA, then I’m going to have to direct them myself," she said, reflecting on her bold decision to take control of her work.
Her journey into directing has since allowed her to bring her stories to life exactly as she imagined, marking a significant evolution in her career.
