Troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), Operation Hadin Kai, successfully thwarted an attempted attack by Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists along the Magumeri-Maiduguri axis in Borno State.
In a statement released on Sunday, Lt.-Col. Olaniyi Osaba, Chief Military Information Officer for the MNJTF in N’djamena, Chad, detailed the tactical operation that led to the recovery of a cache of ammunition from the insurgents.
The troops had laid a strategic ambush, neutralizing the threat before the terrorists could target innocent civilians in the region. According to Osaba, the soldiers positioned themselves along the militants' path and engaged the group as they emerged from a forested area on motorcycles.
"Upon sighting the troops, the terrorists attempted to flee but were met with heavy gunfire, forcing them to abandon their weapons and motorcycles," Osaba stated, adding that the engagement disrupted the terrorists' plans to unleash violence.
Among the recovered weapons were two AK-47 rifles, 51 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, two magazines, and 61 rounds of 7.62 NATO ammunition. Additional items seized included parcels of marijuana and Tramadol, highlighting the militants' reliance on illicit drugs.
The successful operation highlights the continued efforts of the MNJTF in curbing insurgent activities and maintaining peace in the region.
