A Nigerian mother has sparked a wave of online controversy after her son reported that she invested his N800,000 and donated nearly all household foodstuffs to a church project, leaving only salt. The story emerged in a viral post shared by the affected son on X (formerly Twitter).
The young man explained that his older brother initially gave him N1 million to start a point-of-sale (POS) business, with the understanding that he would return the investment before his brother’s final year at university. The younger brother then entrusted N800,000 to his mother to start a poultry business, believing it would be a wise family investment.
However, he later learned that his mother used the entire amount to support a new church project in their village, where she was appointed to a leadership role. Adding to the shock, she reportedly donated all the family’s food items as an additional “seed” offering, retaining only salt.
Sharing his story, he wrote, “My elder brother gave me N1 million to invest in a POS business. I trusted my mom with N800,000 to start a poultry business. But when my brother asked for his money, I only had N200,000 left. I then discovered my mom and her pastor had invested the N800,000 in building a church branch in our village. She didn’t inform me, and I only found out through my uncle.”
He also recounted how he discovered his mother had donated all the food he recently purchased, adding, “I’m considering moving out, but I’m only 20 and unsure about living alone.”
This revelation has spurred widespread debate online, with many questioning the ethics of using family resources for religious offerings without consent. The son’s story has sparked discussions around family finances, faith, and boundaries, with many offering advice and sympathy as he navigates the unexpected situation.
