President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate release of all minors arrested for their alleged involvement in the #EndBadGovernance protests in August
This announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during an emergency briefing at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.
Idris stated, “The President has directed the immediate release of all minors arrested by the Nigeria Police, regardless of any ongoing legal processes. They are to be released without delay.”
Additionally, the President instructed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to prioritize the welfare of these minors and ensure their safe reunion with their parents or guardians across the country.
To address the circumstances surrounding the arrests and treatment of the minors, an administrative committee will be established, led by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs. This committee will examine the issues related to their detention and release.
Furthermore, the President has mandated an investigation into the actions of law enforcement officials involved in the arrests. Should any misconduct be identified, appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken against those responsible.
This directive comes in response to public outcry regarding the trial of at least 76 individuals, including 30 minors, who faced charges ranging from treason to public disturbance and mutiny. The ages of the minors involved range from 14 to 17 years
