The Edo State government has reported that more than 200 government vehicles are currently unaccounted for under the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki. In response to this, Governor Monday Okpebholo has established a 12-member committee tasked with recovering the missing vehicles, which are believed to be in the possession of Obaseki and his aides.

The committee, led by Kelly Okungbowa, was given a two-week mandate to retrieve the vehicles and return them to the state government. Within just 24 hours of its formation, the committee successfully recovered three vehicles, including a Hilux van and two Toyota Hiace buses.

Okungbowa, speaking to journalists, revealed that one of the recovered Hiace buses contained palliatives intended for distribution to Edo residents, including bags of 10kg and 25kg rice and garri. He called on the public to provide more information that could aid in the recovery process, emphasizing that whistleblowers who offer credible and verifiable tips would be rewarded handsomely.

“We promised to follow the law and execute the governor’s mandate to recover all missing government vehicles,” Okungbowa stated. “Within 24 hours of our inauguration, we’ve successfully recovered three vehicles and uncovered palliatives meant for the people of Edo State."

He confirmed that the committee had learned that over 200 government vehicles were unaccounted for, urging citizens and former government officials holding such vehicles to return them within 48 hours. “These vehicles are not private property; they belong to the people of Edo State. It is not right for any individual to steal government property," he added.

Okungbowa also noted that the recovered vehicles came from one private residence and expressed concern about the potential whereabouts of other missing vehicles. “We are just beginning our search and are moving to other locations where we have received credible information,” he said.

The committee has not faced any resistance so far, as security agencies are supporting their operations. Okungbowa assured that they would continue their efforts until all stolen government property is returned.
