A businessman from Abia State, Mr. Ugochukwu Ezeanyagu, has shared his traumatic experience involving operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), who he claims stormed his home in the early hours of December 6, 2024, under suspicion of internet fraud.
In an exclusive interview with ABN TV, Ezeanyagu described how a group of heavily armed EFCC officials arrived at his residence in Umuobia Olokoro Estate, Umuahia, around 2 a.m. The operatives, some of whom were reportedly masked, forcibly broke into his home using hammers, damaging gates and doors in the process. Ezeanyagu said they ransacked the premises, seized his phone and electronic devices, but found no incriminating evidence of any criminal activity.
However, Ezeanyagu emphasized that the most distressing part of the ordeal involved his eight-month pregnant wife, who was allegedly forced to lie face down on the floor while the search was conducted. He claimed that the humiliation of the situation left his wife in shock, requiring hospitalization due to the emotional trauma.
“The most humiliating part was seeing my wife treated with such disregard for her condition and dignity. They didn’t care about her pregnancy or our basic humanity,” Ezeanyagu lamented.
After realizing their error, the EFCC operatives reportedly apologized and left the scene, but the emotional and physical toll on the family had already been inflicted.
This incident has raised concerns about the EFCC's operational tactics, with critics questioning the agency’s approach to investigations. Ezeanyagu has called for justice, urging the anti-graft body to adopt more professional and humane practices in their operations to prevent such traumatic events from happening again.
