The family of a detained woman corporal, Hannah Markson, who was serving in the Enugu State Police Command, has appealed to police authorities to release her and her mother, who is being detained along with her.
The Nigerian Compass learnt that the corporal’s travails might be connected with her alleged affair with a Superintendent of Police (name withheld) serving in the same command.
Sources said the senior police officer involved with the corporal is currently at large after information leaked that he too was to be arrested.
While some of the duo’s colleagues believed they were being victimised by more senior officers who were also interested in having an affair with the corporal, described as “very beautiful,” others said the alleged relationship between the two contravened the rules of the police force.
But, a relation of the fleeing police officer, Mr. Onyeka Peter Onwuka, told our correspondent, in Nnewi, Anambra State, that the affair between his brother and the corporal was not secret, as they were planning to get married soon.
He disclosed that the corporal’s aged mother was among those being detained by the police without any formal charges.
He said a team of policemen that claimed to be acting on the orders of the Enugu State Commissioner of Police arrested the corporal at the official residence of the senior officer, at Agbani road, Enugu, the Enugu State capital.
He disclosed that the corporal was initially released and ordered to proceed immediately on transfer to Abia State Command, despite being denied her request to pick her belongings from the senior officer’s residence, which by then had been been sealed off by police authorities.
She was, however, rearrested at 4am the following day, at her own family house, alongside four other family members by another team of policemen, who also confiscated two laptops, six mobile phones, a sonny DVD Player and N60,000 cash, Onwuka further revealed.
He said the five of them were taken away by the policemen who came in two Toyota Hilux vans.
According to him, the corporal’s mother, who was not around at the time of her daughter’s arrest, was later detained when she went to the headquarters of the State Criminal Investigation Department to find out the reason for action of the police.
He said the Toyota RAV4 (SUV) in which the old woman was driven was also confiscated by the police.
The four relations were later released and the corporal was transferred to the Force Criminal Investigation Department, in Abuja while her mother remained in detention in Enugu, he further disclosed.
Onwuka claimed one of the questions the corporal was asked by her interrogators was her reason for staying in the senior officer’s house when they were not yet legally married.
He thereafter pleaded with the Inspector-General of Police to intervene in the matter and ensure the release of the corporal and her mother, “since no crime had been established against them.”
