Church doctrine or Bible scripture?

Am trying to learn why so many "Christians" blindly follow church doctrine or the words of the reverend fathers/pastors instead of reading and trying to follow the words of the Bible. For example...somewhere in the Bible forbids the making of graven images but yet some churches proudly have them on display... and followers even bow before them. Why is this?

I think it's something to do with the Ten Commandments being replaced by The Two, but I could be wrong.

The graven images thing, for one. was designed to break the Hebrews away from the other faiths in that part of the world. The tragic thing is that it's been interpreted as forbidding artworks, sculptures, and even photographs and film.
