As an African American I often advise some of my people who are interested in their roots and history to pick a country/culture in West Africa and learn about it rather than spending money on genetic tests and genealogy/family history to determine what ethnic group there ancestors came from. As there ancestors likely came from more than a dozen ethnic groups in all of the countries of West Africa.

I myself chose Nigeria and  will be traveling to Nigeria within an year. Most likely to Abuja(friend lives there) and Calabar (some of my ancestors were from this slave port). Do you guys have any suggestions on where one should stay, visit, stay away from, etc...? All suggestions will be greatly appreciated as it will enhance this spiritual and educational journey for me.

if you really want to come then you're welcome, don't listen to anybody's negative impression abt your country. atleast it's where i live and i'm doing just fine. yes i'll do my masters abroad but i'll definitely come back 2 my country to give what i've archived. that's why i'm me and you'll have to be you.

some of you Nigerians are very good at airing ur dirty laundry in public and being negative, to my dear friend konadub, Nigeria's a beautiful place when u mingle with the right crowd, Abuja'a a good start and clabar as well, but u can tell your friends to take you to other great states and learn different cultures, there's a whole lot you can achieve from your future visit. evrywhere you go, you've got to be wise, there's crime everywhere even in America cos i live there too and wud go to Nigeria as many times as i can, its so much fun with the people.have loads of fun.cheers

Some of you just display your backwardness, and myopic views without restriction. Not to talk about sentences packed with grammatic flaws, that become more notiecable when some one is seeking for genuine help through this forum. Konadub you are wellcome when ever you come. Nigeria is not at all as bad as what you have been seeing and hearing from the media. It is also not a spectacular place, just have an open mind, we have our problems just like every other country in the world does. Come with an open mind, and you may just end up seeing what a lot of us cannot see. Best of luck.
