The Senate president, David Mark, has described those prophets who predicted there would be war in Nigeria because of the presidential elections as “prophets of doom”.

Speaking yesterday, April 8, at a ceremony to mark his 67th birthday, the Senate president said Nigerians deserve an apology from them as some fled to their hometowns thinking there would be war and bloodshed.

According to him, these prophets have a way of trying to change their predictions when things don’t go the way they predicted, Vanguard reports.

Mark said: “On Election Day, people thought that the fight was going to be one that had never been seen in this country before, but God heard our prayers, the election came and went, no major incidents.

“Results were announced and President Goodluck Jonathan conceded defeat even before the final result and congratulated General Buhari.

“I think this is God’s way of telling Nigerians that he has put us together and we must remain one united country.

“Those who were predicting that this country will be gone should apologise to Nigerians; there were so many prophesy.

“The problem with all these prophets is that when things do not go their own way, they find another way of coming back and telling us that what they meant was this, they spoke in tongues and we did not understand.

“As a nation, we have risen beyond the wishes of all these prophets of doom, but what is more important is that we have established a firm root of democracy in this country.”

He stressed the need for prophets and all others to stop speculating any more doomsday stories as there was no need for it.

Mark has been in the Senate since 1999 but became its president in June 2007. He won his re-election bid in the March 28 National Assembly elections to represent Benue South Senatorial District.

Mark had earlier said he will remain a loyal member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) no matter what, describing those who have dumped the PDP following its defeat at the just-concluded presidential election as fair weather friends.
