The Cross River State Police Command has detained Corporal Buba Adamu, who has been absent from duty since his transfer to Kaduna State in 2015. The shocking revelation was confirmed by the command’s spokesperson, SP Irene Ugbo, during a press briefing in Calabar on Wednesday.
Adamu, who continued to receive his salary for nearly nine years despite failing to report to his new post, has also been accused of engaging in criminal activities in Calabar.
"The said officer was transferred from Cross River to Kaduna State in 2015, but no one realized he didn’t report to his new station," SP Ugbo stated. "There are allegations that he has been involved in criminal activities around the Bakoko Nassarawa area of Calabar, and all this will be investigated."
Adamu's unauthorized absence came to light following complaints from residents of the Bakoko Nassarawa community, a Hausa/Fulani settlement in Calabar Municipality. Residents reported that Adamu, still wearing his police uniform, had been using his position to intimidate and terrorize them.
The police spokesperson emphasized that Adamu will remain in detention while a thorough investigation is conducted. "The image of the force is important to us. We shall not allow anyone to tarnish our reputation," SP Ugbo added.
Residents recounted instances of bullying and harassment, painting a picture of fear and coercion under Adamu’s unofficial reign. The police are now keen to uncover the extent of Adamu’s activities and ensure justice is served.
