
A tragic incident unfolded in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State as a suspected armed robber, who allegedly stabbed an eighteen-year-old Point of Sale (POS) operator to death, was lynched by angry youths on Monday.
The victim, identified as a young girl preparing for her National Examination Council (NECO) exams, was attacked in her shop near the yam market in Wukari. Sources from the local council reported that the suspect entered the shop under the guise of making a withdrawal but attempted to steal money. When his attempt failed, he resorted to fatally stabbing the operator.
According to an anonymous source, community youths swiftly pursued the suspect after the gruesome act and set him ablaze before authorities could intervene.
Confirming the incident, Chairman Ismaila Dauda expressed sorrow over the young girl's untimely demise. "It is true that one young man went into a POS operator’s shop and stabbed her to death on Monday, June 17th, 2024, in Wukari town," Dauda stated, describing the incident as sad and unfortunate.
Local authorities have launched investigations into the incident, with the state police command also verifying the sequence of events. Acting Public Relations Officer Gambo Kwache of the state police confirmed that the suspect, who stabbed the POS operator, was subsequently lynched by enraged youths.
The tragic event has sparked outrage and renewed calls for improved security measures to safeguard citizens, especially in vulnerable areas such as markets and business premises.
