Tragedy struck in Lokongoma, Lokoja, the capital city of Kogi State, as suspected armed robbers shot and wounded a middle-aged man identified as Abu. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon shortly after Abu exited a new generation bank in the area.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the armed robbers trailed Abu from the bank and intercepted his vehicle. They forcibly removed him from his car, shot him in the thigh, and made off with a bag containing money he had withdrawn from the bank.
An anonymous eyewitness described the harrowing scene: "The armed robbers double-crossed his car, dragged him out, and shot him. They took away a bag full of money which he had earlier withdrawn from the bank."
Confirming the incident, SP William Ovye Aya, the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, informed the media that the victim was swiftly rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. "At about 1:30 pm today, we received a report of a robbery incident in Lokongoma, Lokoja. Our officers found the victim in a critical condition with a gunshot wound to his thigh. He is currently undergoing treatment," Aya stated.
He further disclosed that the armed robbers arrived at the scene in a Toyota Camry with tinted windows, and although an unspecified amount of money was taken, the police managed to recover N131,000 from the scene.
"The Commissioner of Police has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident to apprehend the perpetrators," Aya added, reassuring the public of the police force's commitment to maintaining law and order in the state.
The incident has sparked concern among residents of Lokongoma, prompting heightened security measures as authorities work diligently to bring the culprits to justice.
