
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has recently uncovered an illegal operation in the Lagos Island area of Lagos State. The facility, located in the Oke-Arin market, was found to be producing a variety of alcoholic beverages without proper authorization. NAFDAC's investigation revealed that several packing stores and rooms had been converted into makeshift factories where these drinks were manufactured, packaged, and then distributed openly in the market.
This discovery came after thorough surveillance by NAFDAC officers, highlighting the ongoing challenges in regulating and ensuring the safety of food and beverage products in Nigeria. The agency's actions are part of its broader mandate to protect public health by preventing the distribution of unregulated and potentially harmful products.
‘’During the raid, over 2,000 cartons of empty bottles and already packaged drinks were seized, along with a mini plastic mixing tank, an improvised filter, and various packaging materials. Three suspects, identified as Mr. Ikenna Daniel Ndeka, Mr. Innocent Chike, and Mr. Chukwu John, were arrested in connection with the illegal operation.’’the statement read
The agency adds that the estimated street value of the seized items at N200 million. It urged the public to remain vigilant, especially when purchasing alcoholic beverages.
