In a dramatic turn of events, a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, has remanded 45-year-old lawyer Sunday Ununu in custody following charges of murder and disruption of court proceedings.
Ununu appeared before the court on Friday facing two serious charges: unlawful possession of a firearm and the murder of one Nnamdi Nwite-Ugo. The case, prosecuted by the police, has garnered significant attention due to the lawyer’s disruptive behavior in court.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), when the case was called, Ununu’s conduct was tumultuous. He initially entered the dock but, in a display of frustration, angrily walked out and caused a scene in the courtroom.
Magistrate Ojemba Isu-Oko responded by ordering Ununu’s remand at the correctional center. The court has adjourned the case until September 20 for further hearing.
Prosecutor Eze Ndubuaku, an assistant superintendent of police, detailed the charges against Ununu, stating that on August 21, 2024, in Agbaja-Unuhu, Abakaliki Local Government Area, Ununu allegedly shot and killed Nwite-Ugo. The offences are said to contravene Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap 33, Vol. 1 Laws of Ebonyi State 2009, as well as Section 11 of the Ebonyi State Internal Security Enforcement and Other Related Matters Law, 2009.
