The head of the Public Relations Unit of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, Ubadire Agua has said that all students of the institution are safe, maintaining that none of them died inside an off-campus private lodge.

This followed some recent reports that a male student of the University and his girlfriend died inside a popular private lodge outside the school campus.

The reports which are still trending on social media, claimed that the victims were discovered dead in their private lodge, with a suspected case of food poisoning.

Another report said the dog belonging to the male student was also found dead, increasing the fears that it could be a food poisoning-related problem.

But responding to questions, Ubadire Agua confirmed that he also read the reports on social media but made it clear that such reports have not been officially brought to the knowledge of the school by the Police.

He noted that the school has a data bank developed by the Vice Chancellor, Processor Maduebibisi Iwe where the names of genuine students of the institution are captured.

“To the best of my knowledge, none of the students who live in our hostels is associated with what you are saying as of now. Our hostels are safe and our students who are using our hostel facilities are enjoying the services that we provide.

“We can account for students who live on campus. We can not confirm if the people we see on social media are truly our students but we have a data bank of our students”.

He added that the lodge where the incident reportedly happened was outside the school campus and reiterated the University’s advice to students to be careful with whatever they do.

A message sent to the spokesperson of Abia State Police Command last week by the correspondent concerning the matter is yet to be replied to as of the time of this report.
