Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has urged African governments to ban Kemi Badenoch, leader of the United Kingdom's Conservative Party, from visiting the continent. His remarks come in response to Badenoch's controversial comments about her experiences in Nigeria and her stance on colonialism.
Badenoch has faced backlash for describing her upbringing in Nigeria as one marked by insecurity and corruption, a sentiment that has drawn criticism from figures like Nigeria's Vice President Kashim Shettima. Despite the uproar, she has remained steadfast in her assertions.
During a recent Instagram live session, Kuti denounced Badenoch, accusing her of disrespecting African nations and their history. He referenced past comments attributed to Badenoch, including a claim that Africans should compensate Europeans for the colonial era.
“She’s saying we should pay them for killing millions of our ancestors and for all the atrocities they committed in our lands,” Kuti said. He further argued that African governments should not only bar her from visiting but also consider detaining her if she sets foot on the continent.
Kuti’s strong criticism has sparked discussions across social media, with many weighing in on Badenoch's comments and the broader implications of such statements for Africa's relationship with the West.
